" All but a handful of the competition Shelbys went to independent racers, and they were responsible for some of the more significant victories and finishes at the time.
In the mid-1960s, the SCCA sponsored regional races throughout the country and, at season's end, held the American Road Race of Champions (ARRC). Only the top three cars in each class from each of the six regions were invited to the ARRC. At the 1965 race at Daytona, ten GT-350s were among the fourteen B/Production cars and two alternates invited. Five of those had won regional championships, and Jerry Titus in the Shelby American team car 5R001 went on to win the national title. Six other R-Models finished in the top ten: Bob Johnson in 5R102, Walt Hane in 5R103, Tom Yeager in 5R094, Marty Krinner in 5R100, Brad Booker in 5R210, and Mark Donohue in 5R105.
The ARRC race, which capped the 1966 season the Sunday after Thanksgiving, saw at least eight GT-350s entered. A red flag stopped the race on the fourth lap when DanGerber's5R099,doing over 100 mph, was hit from behind by a Corvette and sent head-on into the pit wall. (Gerber today refers to the incident as setting the World Deceleration Record.) On the restart, it was learned that work had been done to Mark Donohue's 5R105. He was disqualified, along with eventual winner Don Yenko (Corvette), so the 1966 championship went to Walt Hane in 5R103. Also placing in the top six were Fred Van Beuren in 5R108 and Marty Krinner in 5R100.
Eighteen GT-350s were invited to the 1967 ARRC in Daytona. The top four places went to Fred Van Beuren in 5R108, Brad Booker in 5R210, Roger West in 5R538, and Mack Yates in 5R104.
With little support from Ford and with Shelby American gone on to other racing venues, the GT-350s lost ground to the competition in subsequent years."
